A warm yet adventurous book loaded with history. This family story reveals much of the times of coal mining in the mountains of West Virginia. It was as if the author was sitting and sharing his story. I could not put it down until finished, and was pleased as I completed the text. Wonderful little book...as entertaining as it is educational. A rip roaring historical adventure through the early days of West Virginia. The history of coal mining in the area, along with family drama, murder and revenge. Action packed, and full of wry and humorous observations. Delightful!
A lovely book, captivatingly written and beautifully detailed. Interesting facts on the geology and geography of the coal mining country along with all its history, including the tensions that developed between miners and owners. And all this tucked into an intriguing and gripping story featuring well-defined characters - characters that stuck with me for hours after I had finished the book.

Short book, good read. Little brother Larry Collier is a brave man. Joe Collier perseveres in a first person narrative about hard times in West Virginia mines. He tells a nice story until he gives an unexpected twist at the end.
