Aimed at journalists, authors, copywriters, and bloggers, Writing For The Web will show you better ways to write.

If you find yourself stuck writing everything in Microsoft Word, emailing attachments back and forth as a means of collaborating, and are generally put-off by tech jargon like "HTML", "WYSIWYG", and "CMS", then this is the book for you. It will change the way you work and hopefully you'll never look back.

There are tools and processes that let you separate composition from presentation, that make your content much more accessible and future proof, that make it easy to collaborate and share your work. And, unlike Microsoft Word, there are tools that aren’t frustrating and miserable to use; there are tools that will suit you and your needs perfectly.

This book will help you think about the abstract qualities we'd like our content to have and how tools like Microsoft Word fail to provide them. It will explain the methods we have for presenting content in a digital format and introduce Markdown, a text formatting syntax, as a solution for writers and the tools for using it.

*Disclosure: Will is a good friend of mine, and I edited this book. But this review is genuine, and I strongly recommend Writing for the Web.*

As a writer, I'm all too familiar with how easy it is to get stuck in clunky writing and collaboration workflows. For years, I wasted hours of my life struggling through Word's quirks, emailing documents back and forth with clients and later searching around for the most up-to date document covered in confusing track changes notes.

Writing for the Web offers a way out of that chaos, and shows writers tools to streamline their workflows and make their writing processes easier and more enjoyable. Will provides practical examples and resources for how to be a more efficient, productive and professional writer, and I have benefitted a great deal from the advice in this book.

Most importantly, Will doesn't just give a one-size-fits-all workflow or quick fix solutions. He prompts writers to reflect on their processes and what works best for them, emphasizing that this will vary from person to person. And he encourages them to think philosophically about their work and to take pride in it.

The book is a short but powerful read, and will be useful to anyone who writes.

Writing For The Web edition by Will Moyer Casey Hynes Reference eBooks Reviews

Such a great read! I have been looking for more information on this exact thing and this was such a well written book that made everything very clear and easy to understand!
This is a very informative read. I love reading someone else's perspective and this has helped me improve my website and blog.
The author proposes to use MarkDown format, which is a simple intuitive format which translates easily to html, but is more readable and has a format which will stand the test of time. For someone who can not reproduce his thesis report anymore since it was written in an now forgotten word processor format, a valuable tip.
The book has valuable tips about what tools can be used and back up and cooperation strategies.
I've often struggled with formatting within Word and now I understand what's going on.

Ages ago I used Word Perfect which allowed the user to enable format viewing; one could see and edit the embedded codes that affected formatting. Whenever weird stuff happened I'd turn that on, could then see how things had gotten twisted up and could easily untangle the mess.

No such luck with Word.

The author makes the consequences of invisible, embedded format codes clear and offers a viable alternative. I found it well worth the read.
For someone who didn't even realize she had a problem with writing online, this guide was completely helpful and so easy to use. I had always gotten so frustrated with Word but had no idea that there were alternatives.

Moyer's writing style is both conversational and succinct. The writing tips are straightforward and easy to follow for someone who isn't necessarily at the height of technological knowledge.

I also love how he includes real-life tools and websites that you can use to help develop your writing online.

This book is for ANYBODY who ever writes anything online. You can read and understand it in one sitting.
Like most people who went through public school and university, Microsoft Word was the only thing that was offered to me for writing papers for class. After reading this book, It is clear to me how inefficient this is in the real world. The book explains really well how to write *without* Word and in a way that is personal to you. Also, it taught me about Markdown in a very understandable way. I had heard of Markdown before but never looked into it and this book really helped me understand it.

I'd highly recommend this book for anyone who does creative work on the internet. Even if you are not primarily a writer, you'll inevitably end up writing something, and there are way better options than Microsoft Word.
I didn't know how much I wanted to read Will Moyer's book until I read it, and then I swallowed it whole, twice in a matter of days. As a freelance proofreader who studied proofreading and worked freelance twenty years ago in the times of hard copy and red pencils, I've been working recently in Microsoft Word. Using the track changes feature and emailing document versions back and forth is a clunky system at best. I've felt somewhat frustrated with the process, but I believed Word was the most up-to-date, widely used, and best editing and proofreading option presently available – until I read this book. The amount of information and number of web-writing tools it contains is almost overwhelming, but I feel renewed excitement about writing, editing, proofreading, blogging, collaborating, journaling, list-making, and the daily possibilities for working in simple, plain text.
